JOSE is a very old “trademark”, since, we heard about JOSE of Nazareth… Amongst common people and throughout the centuries and continents a lot of fabulous JOSE’s can be found. Recently, some of the best that Portugal has to offer has the “trademark” JOSE, for example, JOSÉ Mourinho and JOSÉ Saramago.
Three years ago, we started the association from this old and prestigious “trademark” with products. Olive oil from the oldest trees within our borders, firewater from Lourinhã, canned goods from the seas of our coast and more. We selected some of the best classics, created some new ones, “dressed” them according to our century and showed them to the world. We believe in sustained growth and what to be “somewhere” in 5 years seeking the balance between work and fun in between. Only the tip of the iceberg is in plain sight, join us in this journey!
We don’t produce, we select. We select products of small production and great quality and have an honest relationship with our suppliers. We pay on time, normally beforehand and we don’t argue about price. We ask the same from our clients. The ones that possess the quality of producing for us, have pride on what they accomplish, select the best ingredients, have passion and deserve the same commitment.
We find customers (or are found) that seek the best amongst the best and are willing to pay the “right” price.
Our entire design is the responsibility of Luis Mendonça. We chose someone with great quality, outside the world of packaging, to find out-of-the-box solutions. If you like our products simply because they’re beautiful know that we use this beauty to grab your attention. Really, what we want is to encourage you to taste them and became a happier and more attentive consumer.
We would like you to taste them alongside others like Italian, Spanish and French products… We want to show you that Portugal has great products that deserve the recognition and consumption of those that really appreciate quality and most of all, provide that same recognition to who, with great care, makes them.
We cannot compete and will not compete with mass products nor industries. The fruit in our jams is handpicked and cared for. Our canned fish are made in the old, most caring way and with more manpower. Our firewater doesn’t have caramel nor other tricks to turn it smoother, even though it is. If you are looking for genuine products, then you are, potentially, a JOSE GOURMET customer.
Portugal has some of the best brandies in the world. Those who advocate this are specialists. We should have an industry cluster of this fructose drink. Taste them alongside a Conhaque or Armanhac. Taste them again and take the caramel off the Armanhac...
If you want drink, after a meal, a genuine and excellent brandy then choose this one amongst half a dozen others sublime brandies we produce in Portugal. Imagine what would happen to our economy if we replaced 5% of whisky world consumption with brandies.
As well as working with some traditional Portuguese jams we want to create some new ones. One of our jam producers, Adelia, created a very well composed Arbutus Berry jam and we would like to make the most of tradicional but hidden tastes yet to explore...
Find customers that value what we still waste. Seek within our Portuguese DNA the difference, which today is valued.
We want to inspire new ways of cultural, social, economic and food enrichment. Thankfully there are examples that move towards simpler ideas. One of them is Gisele Bündchen. One of the great world top models raises chickens on her L.A. mansion. “What is the problem of having chickens»? I will have fresh eggs every day besides loving the farm environment” Gisele says to the newspaper “Folha de São Paulo”. She doesn’t eat anything that is industrialized and is planting 50 fruit trees.
This is a tendency for the future. Escaping the transgenic and everything that comes along with it. Portugal is in a privileged position. What we have and produce is valued by these niches. Maybe now more than ever.
We open the newspaper and read that a certain product is sold in NY for 10$ but if it was Italian or French it would be sold for 30$. Here’s an opportunity.
A product can have an added value that isn’t recognized. Portugal is full of these examples that we should learn to value. These are the products that we should show the world!
The sardines strolled along the atlantic coast, caressing, up shore, down shore. And, from laughing, stretching, shaking and wriggling so much…the coast became as we know it to be today.
Illustration Bernardo Carvalho
A certain sardine wanted to transform itself into a tomato. The transformation was done, however it lost its entire aroma and did not find its red and plain appearance to be very charming. So it decided to go back to its original form and invited the tomato over to converse: conversation about conservation.
Illustration Marta Madureira
A lemon and a sardine fell in love. She would visit him on land and he would go see her at sea. Passion rhymes with sardine and lemon. And it is proven that sardine is good for the heart…one that is passionate.
Illustration Inês Oliveira
On a sunny hillside, an olive rolled down the mountain and finally stopped at sea. He wanted to learn to swim, but since he had no fins, a little sardine took him to see the ocean, while holding him closely to her roe.
Illustration Gémeo Luís
A small sardine had a very delicate spine and fins, she was overall very fragile. She asked a chile to help her get rid of her inoffensive look. So, the chile kept her small but made her spicy.
Illustration Rui Mendonça
A certain tuna fish, who felt the water was cold, decided to warm it by increasing the temperature of its body. It was not able to heat up the entire ocean, but managed to keep its body warm.
Illustration André Letria
The tuna fish would spend their time swimming. One day, they decided to compete. They swam and swam and swam. No one reached the end. Until today they are still searching for the finish line, but none know where it may be.
Illustration Yara Kono
A squid wanted to be a painter. With eyes wide open, he would paint everything he saw. But, as soon as he was done painting, he would change colour and camouflage himself with his paintings. So no one would actually see him at his exhibitions.
Illustration João Vaz de Carvalho
Squid have three hearts, but this one wanted more. Maybe because he enjoyed listening to the rhythm of the heart beat to his favourite music. So, in exchange for some of his legs, he got some more hearts. How many? You do the math!
Illustration Emílio Remelhe
Small horse mackerel, medium horse mackerel, big horse mackerel…the whole day was escabeche, with such a huge population. However one horse mackerel took charge of the situation: He began to read stories to all and all became more attentive.
Illustration Cristina Valadas
Tired of living the winter in the dark depths of the sea, a certain chub mackerel decided to change her destiny. Disguised as a fillet, she managed to pass by the sea-horse guards. Now she no longer shivers in fear, but shivers because of the cold.
Illustration Teresa Lima
That trout would never stop: His first movement, he would swim in pure waters, the second movement, he would swim along the rivers and shores, the third movement he would climb mountains and the fourth movement…listened to Schubert.

Dear reader, this morning I saw and bought your products in a store in Holland. I’m very impressed by it’s beauty! Can you tell me if you have a supplier in Holland and who that is. I would like to do business with you through the supplier. Would you be so kind to answer this question for me? With kind regards, Lena Pijnenburg-Maelissa
